Programs for Individuals

The Ignatian Centre offers prayer companioning and spiritual direction adapted to each person’s level of spiritual growth. Each of the levels offers one-on-one accompaniment for a prayer.

Prayer Companioning

If you are interested in developing a personal relationship with God, prayer companioning may be for you. Prayer Companions are sympathetic listeners rather than problem solvers. They will help you to recognize and respond to God’s presence in your life.
This program develops skills such as:
  • Attentiveness to God and self
  • Ability to pray with Scripture
  • Ability to reflect and journal
Your commitment is to pray on a daily basis, and to meet with a prayer companion on a mutually agreed upon schedule.

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius

St. Ignatius of Loyola experienced a profound conversion and period of spiritual growth as a young adult. The Spiritual Exercises are the fruit of his observations. He wrote down his experience and organized it into four “weeks” or stages, and began to give this as a retreat for his friends. The Exercises are structured to foster:
  • Heightened awareness of God’s love
  • Discernment
  • Deepening of discipleship/vocation
  • Greater inner freedom
Pre-requisite skills:
  • Ability to pray with Scripture
  • Attentiveness: listening to God and Self
  • Journaling
Your Commitment:
  • Meet with a spiritual director once a week
  • Become accustomed to praying with Scripture before entering the Exercises
  • Pray daily for one hour
  • Set aside 9-12 months to complete the Exercises

On-Going Spiritual Direction

If you have already prayed through the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, or have received spiritual direction on regular basis, you may wish to continue this discipline in your daily life. On-going spiritual direction is also a good way for pastoral ministers and other persons in the helping professions to keep their activities rooted in a continuing relationship with God. Trained directors are available for those who seek further spiritual growth.
